In 1886 Horace W Nicholls set sail for Valparaiso in Chile. The voyage would have taken up to 7 weeks by steamship round the treacherous Cape Horn at the southern tip of S America. Nicholls was 19 years of age. It’s almost certain that he was employed as an assistant at the studios of Diaz & Spencer, photographers who had formed a partnership of portrait studios in Valparaiso and Santiago.
