It looks unusual with its twin tails and central rocket fuselage, but that design let it climb more than 100 kilometers above Earth and glide safely back down. Only 17 flights were made, 3 of them into space, and the project proved private space travel could really happen. Today, the original sits in the Smithsonian alongside the Spirit of St. Louis and the Bell X-1.
