Shortly after Texas native Michael Nesmith arrived in Los Angeles in 1963, the singer-songwriter was cast in "The Monkees," a hit TV series about a fictional rock band. Nesmith contributed original songs—including “Papa Gene’s Blues” and “Sweet Young Thing” (the latter written with Gerry Goffin and Carole King)—that lent country-rock flavor to the band's repertoire.
