As we enter August, the Atlantic Hurricane Season really begins to ramp up. The National Hurricane Center says on average, 86% of named storms happen after August 2.

Tropical Storm Dexter, the fourth named system of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, formed late Sunday night well east of North Carolina. The system is now moving away from the U.S. East Coast, posing no land threat, but it signals a shift toward more frequent tropical development in the Atlantic.

This is just the fourth named storm in the Atlantic since the hurricane season began on June 1. Storms are named once they reach tropical storm status, which occurs when a storm reaches maximum sustained surface winds of at least 39 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
