CANNON FALLS, Minn. — On the same day President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico went into effect, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen visited a corn and soybean farm in southeast Minnesota to highlight the impact a trade war would have on the state’s farmers.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said later on Tuesday that the U.S. would likely meet Canada and Mexico “in the middle,” with an announcement coming as soon as Wednesday. Lutnick told Fox Business News the tariffs would not be paused, but that Trump would reach a compromise.

China’s embassy in the U.S. issued a warning that the country was ready for a trade war or “any other type of war" with the U.S. following Trump’s additional 10% tariffs imposed on the country Tuesday.
