Compounded GLP-1s have given rise to a cottage industry offering cheaper weight loss medications to many Americans — but now soon they may be unavailable to most.

After years of weight loss drug shortages, the FDA is saying there’s now an adequate supply for most medications and they will be prohibiting like-for-like compounded versions.

Consumers who use telehealth or medical spas to get less expensive, compounded weight loss drugs will need to get their medications elsewhere.

To be a person in the year 2025 is to encounter, in one way or another, the marketing onslaught for compounded GLP-1s—medications containing the same active ingredients as the blockbuster weight-loss drugs but sold at a much lower price.

In its Monday update, the FDA clarified that state-licensed compounding pharmacies and outsourcing facilities — which make compounded drugs in bulk — have until April 22 and May 22 respectively, or until the court decides on the injunction to stop making Wegovy copies, whichever comes later.

Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide diabetes and weight loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy, are no longer officially in shortage in the US, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That means that compounding pharmacies and outsourcing facilities that had been legitimately preparing their own versions of the drugs will no longer be permitted to do so.

The medicines watchdog has agreed the drugs are safe and cost-effective for NHS use. Last year, semaglutide was approved for treating obesity under the brand name Wegovy. It has also been licensed under the brand name Ozempic for treating diabetes in some circumstances,

Compounded versions of popular drugs used for weight loss including Wegovy and Zepbound will soon no longer be available after a decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
