An arctic air mass will channel temperatures 20-30 degrees below already historically cold January averages. The South braced for a rare winter storm.

More than 170 million people across the United States, from the Mexican border to the Canadian border are under cold weather alerts ahead of a crippling winter storm expected to sweep through the south from Texas to Georgia,

During our blast of Arctic air, we should expect high temperatures to fall about 10 to 15 degrees below average. When you factor in the bitter wind chills, it will be feeling more like 20+ degrees below average from time to time.

The coldest weather of the winter is here and won’t relent until late this week. Highs may not escape the 20s until Friday; on Wednesday, they may not surpass the teens. While it’s cold, it’s dry. Significant snow is not in the forecast this week. By the weekend, temperatures will start to moderate some.
