Trump's pardon of violent Jan. 6 rioters raises fears that he'll pardon anyone who commits crimes on his behalf in the future

Republican senators struggled to defend Donald Trump’s decision to commute and pardon hundreds of January 6 protesters including those who were charged and convicted of crimes against police officers,

Trump issued “a full, complete and unconditional pardon" to people punished for their involvement in the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including those who assaulted law enforcement officers.

One Trump voter told NPR he supported pardons related to the Capitol attack, but has a tougher time reconciling pardons for rioters who were violent with police.

The pardons came via executive order that commuted the sentences of 14 high-profile Jan. 6 convicts, none of whom were from New Jersey, and granted the rest — well over 1,500 people — a “full, complete and unconditional pardon,” or dismissal of their pending case. The order also frees anyone in prison for a Jan. 6 crime.
