Péter Szijjártó, Hungarian Foreign Minister, has threatened to block Ukraine's accession to the European Union in response to the registration of draft law No. 12380 in the Ukrainian parliament, which would ban the transit of Russian oil and gas through Ukraine during martial law.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has furiously reacted to a bill registered in the Ukrainian parliament that proposes a ban on Russian oil and gas transit during martial law.

Ukraine has declared that it is ready to replace Hungary in the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should Budapest prefer to join Russian-led blocs. The statement was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Wednesday.

Ukraine had already decided not to renew its gas transit deal with Russia beyond Dec. 31, 2024, but continues to allow Russian oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline under a contract valid until the end of 2029.

In a Facebook post, Szijjártó commented on the bill No. 12380, which proposes banning the transit of Russian oil and gas through Ukraine during martial law. “In this regard, I must respectfully remind our Ukrainian colleagues that there are rights and obligations.
