Search and recovery teams continued scouring the site of one of India's worst aviation disasters on Saturday, three days after an Air India plane bound for London fell crashed and killed at least 270 people in Gujarat state.

The aviation ministry on Saturday said that the flight data recorder of the Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday has been found, adding that the flight had climbed 650 feet in the air before it started descending.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, audio recordings from cockpit voice recorders supplement flight data by providing related details on flight crew responses. The recordings also aid in assessments of how radio communications or other outside distractions may have been a factor in an accident.

A black box in an aircraft is a vital safety device used to investigate air crashes. It consists of two parts—the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder.

Upstream Aviation Director Tim Collins says the Boeing 787 Air India crash could be due to “several things” which will only be discovered once all data has been collected.
