The leaders of both Canada and Mexico got on the phone with President Donald Trump this past week to seek solutions after he slapped tariffs on their countries, but China’s president appears unlikely to make a similar call soon.

Beijing issued the forceful statement following the Trump administration's move to double the tariffs already in place for Chinese imports.

Beijing imposed broad tariffs on imports of American food and said 15 U.S. companies could no longer buy from China without special permission.

The tariff actions, which could upend nearly $2.2 trillion in two-way annual U.S. trade, went live hours after Trump declared that all three countries had failed to do enough to stem the flow of the deadly fentanyl opioid.

China's commerce minister says Beijing will not yield to bullying and its economy can weather tariffs and other challenges, though there are “no winners in a trade war."

The inconsistent trade policy coming from Washington leaves Beijing with no clear path to take to get out of the crosshairs. That leaves retaliation as the most likely response.
