This pair served as the shutdown group, seeing plenty of the Lightning’s top line and keeping them off the board. Both Ekman-Larsson and Tanev did a good job winning puck battles in their own zone and transitioning the puck up the ice.
As it’s his full-time gig Cooper dealt first with the most immediate issue after the morning skate, trying to beat the Leafs for the first time in three tries, turning to backup Jonas Johansson in goal. The Leafs had to be relieved not to see Andrei Vasilievskiy’s name on the board.
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll received a maintenance day and did not practice Tuesday. Woll has been operating as the Maple Leafs’ No. 1 goaltender and has started in Toronto’s past four games.
The Leafs, after losing three straight, fired off three consecutive victories and are one of the NHL’s hottest teams, winning eight of their last 11.
