Yzerman made a modest deal Friday, collecting two more veteran retreads – Petr Mrazek and Craig Smith – for a middlin’ young player in Joe Veleno. The Wings addressed positions of need – goalie and center – but did nothing to inspire short-term optimism.
The Chicago Blackhawks today announced that the team has acquired forward Joe Veleno from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek and forward Craig Smith.
Mrazek, who has one additional year on his contract at $4.25 million, heard his name as possible trade bait, but wasn't sure what to expect. While excited about rejoining the Wings, Mrazek does become part of a three-goaltender rotation with Lyon and Cam Talbot.
Veleno went from a playoff hunt with Detroit to the top of the draft lottery with Chicago, but he's determined to help the rebuild.
Although Veleno struggled with the Wings this season, the Hawks are curious to find out if they can unlock something new in their Friday trade acquisition.
DETROIT -- Both practicing with the Detroit Red Wings for the first time since being acquired via trade from the Chicago Blackhawks prior to the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, Craig Smith and goalie Petr Mrazek are excited to help their new team push for a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot down the final stretch of the season.
