Sony‘s PS3 is getting a system software update this week. That isn’t a sentence that most people thought they would be reading in the year 2025, some 19 years after the console’s initial release date when the PS5 is the current console.

This is critical for users who still use their PS3 to play Blu-ray discs, as it ensures continued compatibility with new Blu-ray releases. The update requires at least 200MB of free space on the PS3 hard drive or removable storage device.

Sony has released a new PS3 system software update almost nine years after the console was discontinued, although it's a pretty small one.

Anyone who happens to boot up their old PlayStation 3 may be in for a surprise as the 19-year-old console has a software update to perform. Sony announced software update 4.92 for the PS3 Wednesday morning on their @AskPlayStation account on X.
