In the XP recovery console, I couldn't even make a copy of the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM3\CONFIG\SOFTWARE file, presumably because of some NTFS corruption.
FWIW, I am using Sony's OEM Windows XP Home Edition installation on one of their multi-media desktop system. I encountered the same issue with a Recovery Console installation.
