Six people have been killed in two states in a powerful March storm, officials said, as the severe weather system that brought blizzards to the Great Plains and high winds to the South continued to move across the United States.

An organized line of thunderstorms was active during the morning hours east of the Appalachians, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings and even a few tornado warnings.

Des Moines, along with much of central Iowa, is under a blizzard warning for Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Rain and snow are expected over the next two days, and high winds will accompany them.

Prepare for a winter storm to bring heavy snow, gusty winds, and near zero visibility overnight into tomorrow morning.

Officials urged people to stay at home as a winter storm carrying high winds caused a “complete whiteout” in the Des Moines area on Wednesday morning, March 5.
