Saif Ali Khan was attacked in his home, where he sustained six stab wounds when a burglar entered his house. The assailant, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested and confessed to the crime.

The Mumbai police said they have found as many as 19 fingerprints of Bangladeshi national Mohammed Shariful Islam, alias Vijay Das, who allegedly attacked Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his house on January 16 in a failed robbery attempt, from the crime scene.

After an over 70-hour joint operation, Mumbai Police and the crime branch were able to catch the 30-year-old attacker who stabbed Saif Ali Khan at his home.
