Apple is preparing three generations of 5G modem with the first arriving in the 2025 iPhone SE 4. The third generation may be coming to Macs and possibly Vision Pro too.

After reports suggested Apple scrapped its plans to make in-house 5G modems, it seems the company has a three-year plan to replace Qualcomm.

The third modem, due for high-end iPhones and iPads starting in 2027, is code-named Prometheus. The report claims that Apple believes it can beat Qualcomm with a combination of better component performance, AI features, and next-gen satellite connectivity.

Using its own 5G modem chip for the iPhone 17 Air will allow Apple to make the phone 2 mm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro. The latter measures 8.25 mm thick. Apple will be able to make the iPhone 17 Air extremely thin while leaving enough room for the camera, battery, and display components.

Using iPhone SE 4 as a launching pad for new hardware, like the Apple 5G modem, is a brilliant move on Apple's part.

Macworld It’s no secret that Apple has been working on its own cellular modem. However, Apple hasn’t said anything about its modem development since announcing that it bought Intel’s model division over five years ago.

Apple is reportedly developing an in-house modem, codenamed Sinope, to replace Qualcomm chips in iPhones by 2025. It is likely to promise improved efficiency and design, paving the way for innovations like foldable iPhones and cellular connectivity for Macs.
