Ukraine’s parliament has passed a resolution reaffirming that elections cannot be held while the country remains under martial law, directly countering US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s legitimacy is in question due to the absence of elections during the war.

The UN vote came on the day Mr Trump hosted French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer set to visit on Wednesday.

The response to Elon Musk’s “What did you do last week?” threat is the first sign that even staunch White House allies are beginning to flex their political muscle against him.
